Griswold Brass Kidney Rib | HAND + FIRE POTTERY TOOLS

Griswold Brass Kidney Rib | HAND + FIRE POTTERY TOOLS

$28.00

Pottery rib in hand hammered brass. Smaller than our original Kidney Rib and ultra flexible—good for smoothing fine clays or for use on the wheel.

A replication of a 30+ year old rib, made as a special request from a fellow potter and named in their honor.

One of the potter’s most used tools. The metal rib is primarily used in Sage’s studio to smooth and compress slabs of clay to ready them for building. She also uses it to burnish the surface of pots, scrape excess slip from thrown work, and to facet leather hard clay. It’s a multi-tool, necessary for any potter.

The thin brass is flexible enough to smooth slabs or shape pots, while holding its shape. The hammering done to the surface of this brass rib is not only aesthetically pleasing, it hardens the brass to withstand gentle bending as it’s used. The texture will also allow a uniquely patterned patina to develop over time — which we think makes the tool even more special.

2 3/4” long x 1 3/4” wide
